Our Targe

At the Sgoil Shamhraidh anns a' Gheamhradh held at Collaroy in July 2003, Bruce Smith presented Comunn Gàidhlig Astràilia with a leather shield which he made himself, based on the size and style of the targes carried by the Highlanders in the 1700s.

It is made of cowhide, with brass studs and tooled designs of Celtic intertwining knotwork, and features the words Suas leis a' Ghàidhlig.

Because the targe could be used both as an offensive weapon and also for defence, Bruce thought it was an appropriate gift since we are trying to protect the Gaelic language.
